Obverse description Three heraldic shields arranged in pyramid formation, with the uppermost shield bearing the Hessian lion positioned centrally above two flanking shields; the last two digits of the date ('91') appear to either side of the upper shield, and the mintmaster's initials 'HR' are placed in the field between the lower two shields, which bear the arms of Diez (right) and Ziegenhain (left). The entire device is set within a beaded border characteristic of late sixteenth-century German hammered coinage.
