| Obverse description | The arms of the City of Cologne displayed at center within an oval shield: the upper half bearing three fleur-de-lis crowns on a plain field, the lower half charged with eleven flames or ermine spots, representing the eleven thousand virgins of St. Ursula. The shield is flanked by two large spread eagle wings, evoking the imperial eagle tradition of the Free Imperial City. Above the shield rests a large civic crown with elaborate foliage, while below the shield a small orb or roundel appears at the base, completing the heraldic composition. |
