Obverse description Central field displays a Gothic letter G surmounted by an ornate municipal crown, with the two digits of the date flanking the crowned monogram — the first two digits of the year appearing to the left and the final two to the right. The crowned G serves as the civic emblem of the city of Göttingen, rendered in a bold Gothic style characteristic of 17th-century German municipal coinage. A beaded or toothed border encircles the entire design. The lettering and device are struck in low relief consistent with hammered billon coinage of the period.
