Additional information

Christopher of Brunswick served as Archbishop of Bremen from 1511 until his death in 1558, one of the longer episcopal tenures in the see's history, though his administration coincided with the opening decades of Lutheran reform that would eventually strip the archbishopric of much of its authority in the region. The grote was the dominant small silver denomination across the North Sea coastal territories, and Bremen's issues circulated widely into Hamburg and the Frisian markets.

This 1512 piece comes from the very first full year of Christopher's mint production.
