Croatia's adoption of the euro in January 2023 prompted the Croatian National Bank to begin issuing collector pieces denominated in euros for the first time, with King Tomislav — the 10th-century ruler traditionally credited as Croatia's first king, crowned around 925 AD — an obvious early choice for the series. The historical record on Tomislav is notably thin: almost everything known about him derives from a single letter written by Pope John X, which makes the precise dates of his reign a matter of ongoing scholarly dispute.
