Croatia adopted the euro in January 2023, and this commemorative is among the first Croatian issues denominated in euros rather than kuna — the currency Petrović himself spent his entire career earning in. He died in a car accident in Germany in June 1993 at 28, mid-contract with the New Jersey Nets, widely considered by that point the best European player to have reached the NBA.
The four-euro face value has no circulation equivalent in the eurozone; it exists purely as a collector denomination, a device the Croatian National Bank has used to sidestep the ECB's restrictions on issuing standard euro collector coinage.
