Obverse description Central design features a large, highly detailed oak tree with an expansive, leafy canopy rendered in high relief, its trunk dominating the field. At the base of the trunk, a small mythical figure — evoking a character from Croatian folklore as depicted in Brlić-Mažuranić's literary works — stands in dynamic pose. The denomination '4 EURO' appears in two lines to the lower right of the field. The circular legend 'REPUBLIKA HRVATSKA' arcs along the upper periphery, divided by the canopy of the tree.

Additional information

Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić, often called the "Croatian Andersen" after Hans Christian Andersen, was the first woman nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature from the region — twice, in 1931 and 1938 — though she never received it. She died in 1938, the same year as her second nomination. Her 1916 collection Priče iz davnine remains the foundational text of Croatian children's literature and has been translated into over twenty languages.

Croatia adopted the euro on 1 January 2023, making this a relatively early collector issue under the new currency framework. The 4-euro denomination is a purely numismatic format with no circulation equivalent.
