Additional information

Fernando VII's 1808 proclamation pieces were struck not to celebrate a coronation in the conventional sense, but to mark the formal acclamation of a king who had effectively seized the throne from his own father, Carlos IV, under French pressure at Bayonne — weeks before Napoleon rendered the entire exercise moot by forcing Fernando's abdication in favor of Joseph Bonaparte. The Mexico City mint produced these pieces in the narrow window between Fernando's March accession and the June abdication news reaching New Spain.

Fr#95 is among the scarcer proclamation denominations, produced in limited numbers as ceremonial rather than commercial coinage.
