Obverse description Central quartered shield of the Spanish royal arms surmounted by an ornate royal crown, displaying the castles of Castile and lions of León in the first and fourth quarters, the pomegranate of Granada at the base, the Portuguese escutcheon and the lilies of Anjou in the inescutcheon, flanked by the Pillars of Hercules with the arms of Aragon and Sicily visible. The mint mark 'S' appears to the left of the shield and the denomination mark 'IIII' to the right. The surrounding legend reads PHILIPPVS · III · D · G S B IIII in Latin characters within a beaded border.
