Obverse description Armored and draped bust of Carlos III facing right, struck under the reign of Carlos IV during the transitional period in which the older portrait die continued in use. The effigy features elaborately curled hair tied at the nape, with fine detailing on the cuirass and lace cravat. The date 1789 appears in the lower exergue flanked by pellets. The circular Latin legend CAROL•IV•D•G•HISP•ET IND•R runs along the periphery, interrupted by the portrait, with a finely toothed border enclosing the entire design.
