Obverse description The crowned royal arms of Spain occupy the central field, displaying the quartered shield with castles and lions, surmounted by a royal crown. The shield is flanked by the pillars of Hercules in the lower portion of the design, characteristic of the cob (macuquina) coinage style. The legend CAROLVS · II · D · G MD IIII runs partially around the periphery, though as a hammered cob the full inscription is rarely fully visible. The die was struck on an irregularly shaped planchet, resulting in the characteristic uneven flan associated with Spanish macuquina gold coinage of this period.
