Additional information

Wilhelm of Rosenberg was the last male of his line — he died in 1592 without an heir, ending one of Bohemia's most powerful noble houses. This 4-ducat piece dates from his final years, when Wilhelm was actively patronizing the arts and maintaining one of the most lavish courts in Central Europe, rivaling even the imperial court at Prague. Noble coinage of this type required a specific privilege granted by the emperor, and Rosenberg's right to strike gold was a mark of extraordinary political standing.

The Friedensburg reference places this among a tiny documented group. Survivors in any condition are rare; the issue was never intended for commerce.
