| Obverse description | Two patron saints of Salzburg depicted facing one another in the central field: Saint Rupert on the left, mitred and vested in episcopal robes, seated and holding a model of the city of Salzburg in his left hand and a crozier in his right, and Saint Virgil on the right, similarly mitred and robed, both figures sharing a common pastoral staff between them. A detailed architectural representation of the city of Salzburg appears in the lower field between the two figures. The surrounding legend reads S RVDPERTVS ET S VIRGILIVS EPI SALZBURGEN, enclosed within a rope border typical of the period's Salzburg hammered gold coinage. |
