This piece commemorates the Danish repulse of the Swedish assault on Copenhagen in February 1659, when Karl X Gustav marched his army across the frozen Øresund and Little Belt in one of the most audacious winter campaigns in Scandinavian history — only to be turned back at the city walls. Frederik III, whose kingship had been largely ceremonial before the crisis, emerged from the siege with genuine political capital, which he converted two years later into hereditary absolute monarchy. The coin is a direct artifact of that transformation.
Hede 98 is among the rarest of the Danish commemorative gold issues from this period. Most examples trace to old cabinet collections; fresh-to-market specimens are exceptional.
