Ferdinand of Bavaria held the Bishopric of Münster from 1612 until his death in 1650, simultaneously accumulating five other ecclesiastical offices including the Archbishopric of Cologne — a concentration of church wealth that drew persistent criticism from Rome and rival dynasties alike. This 1647 issue falls squarely within the final phase of the Thirty Years' War, the year before the Peace of Westphalia was signed at Osnabrück and Münster itself. Gold multiple-ducat pieces of this type were not struck for circulation; they functioned as presentation pieces and diplomatic gifts exchanged during the very negotiations concluding just miles away.
