Struck to mark the coronation of Matthias as Holy Roman Emperor in Frankfurt on June 13, 1612, this piece belongs to a well-established tradition of Frankfurt issuing commemorative multiples for imperial coronations — the city having served as the site of imperial elections and coronations since the Golden Bull of 1356. Matthias had already been ruling as de facto head of the Habsburg lands for years before the coronation, having forced his brother Rudolf II to cede authority progressively from 1608 onward.
Frankfurt's coronation ducats were distributed as gifts during the ceremony itself, not struck for commerce.
