Obverse description A rampant lion facing left occupies the central field, brandishing a sword in its raised right forepaw while resting its left forepaw upon a Spanish-shaped shield bearing the quartered arms of Zürich. The heraldic composition is enclosed within an elaborate wreath of laurel and decorative foliage, with the encircling legend arranged in the outer border. The design is executed in a confident Baroque engraving style characteristic of mid-seventeenth-century Swiss civic coinage.
