Cook Islands issued a series of small-denomination gold pieces in the early 2000s nominally valued at four dollars — a face value bearing no relationship to gold spot price, a legal fiction required to classify them as circulating coinage under Cook Islands law and thereby exempt them from certain import duties in target collector markets.
