The Nugget series launched in 1986 as Australia's answer to the South African Krugerrand and Canadian Maple Leaf, giving Perth Mint its first internationally competitive bullion program. The $4 denomination — tied to 1/10 troy ounce fractional gold — was never intended for circulation; it exists purely as a vehicle for small-lot gold investment, and the face value is essentially ceremonial under Australian legal tender law.
By 2001, the fourth portrait of Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley had been standard on Australian coinage for four years, having replaced Raphael Maklouf's effigy across the board in 1998.
