Obverse description The obverse bears the bank title "THE BANK OF BRITISH NORTH AMERICA" across the top and "INCORPORATED BY ROYAL CHARTER" along the bottom. The central vignette shows two allegorical figures flanking a pastoral scene, with the denomination "$4" appearing in oval counters at upper left and upper right; the words ONE, FOUR, POUND, and DOLLARS occupy the four corner panels. Two additional female allegorical vignettes appear at left and right, and a manuscript promise-to-pay text reads "This Bank will pay the Bearer on demand One Pound Currency" with the place of issue noted as HAMILTON and the date partially printed; the illustrated example is overprinted SPECIMEN.
