Obverse description Central field features the crowned Portuguese royal arms — an oval shield displaying the quinas (five escutcheons arranged in a cross) and the bordure of castles — set within an ornate oval cartouche surmounted by a royal crown. To the left of the shield appears the mint mark 'L' (Lisbon) above the value mark 'IIII', and to the right the assayer's initial 'B'. The circumferential legend reads PHILIPPVS D G REX PORTVGAL, interrupted by the shield, and is contained within a beaded inner border. The overall style is characteristic of Iberian hammered gold coinage of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries.
