Obverse description Draped bust of Artavasdes II facing right, wearing the Armenian tiara with lappets folded upward, the tiara decorated with a star and eagles and secured by a diadem. The letter Α appears in the left field behind the bust. The portrait is rendered in the Hellenistic tradition, with strong facial features characteristic of late Armenian royal coinage.

Additional information

Artavasdes II ruled Armenia as a client king caught between Rome and Parthia — a balancing act he ultimately failed. When Mark Antony invaded in 34 BC, Artavasdes was captured, paraded in silver chains through Alexandria, and eventually executed on Cleopatra's orders around 31 BC. This bronze issue almost certainly dates to the final months of his independent rule before that campaign, making surviving examples effectively the last coinage struck under his authority.
