Obverse description The Portuguese royal coat of arms, depicting a crowned escutcheon with the traditional quinas arrangement, occupies the central field. The shield is surmounted by a crown of three visible points. Flanking the arms on either side are the mint initials C and B (or B and C depending on variety), positioned in the left and right fields respectively. The overall design is characteristic of the crude hammered coinage produced for Portuguese Indian colonial circulation.
