| Reverse description | The reverse displays a bold, raised monogram in the central field composed of the intertwined letters BC and YO, representing the royal cypher of João III (Joannes) combined with the mint initial for Cochim, struck in high relief relative to the surrounding flat field. The design is characteristically primitive in execution, with uneven strike distribution and a flan edge that is irregular and somewhat lobate, as is standard for hammered Portuguese Indian copper issues. The legends, where present, are mostly effaced by wear. The overall style is consistent with the Gomes J3 13 type attributed to the Cochim mint workshop of the 1530s–1540s. |
