The Union Numismatique d'Alsace issued this piece in 1996 as Strasbourg prepared for its expanding role within European institutions — the city having hosted the Council of Europe since 1949 and the European Parliament on a permanent basis from 1999. The 4⅔ écu denomination is a deliberate archaism, referencing the old convention by which one French livre tournois equaled 4⅔ silver écus, a ratio codified under the Ancien Régime monetary system. Jetons d'entrée of this type were admission tokens for numismatic society events, not circulation strikes.
