Keatinge & Ball operated out of Columbia, South Carolina after relocating from Richmond, and became the Confederacy's most prolific security printer during the war years — but this Missouri Defense Bond occupies an unusual position. Missouri never formally seceded; it was a border state with a pro-Confederate shadow government operating in exile while a Union-aligned administration held effective control. Notes and bonds issued under that rump government circulated in contested territory, if they circulated meaningfully at all.
Columbia's printing facilities were destroyed in February 1865 when Sherman's troops burned the city, taking a substantial portion of Keatinge & Ball's remaining stock and records with them.
