The Banco del Litoral was one of several provincial banks operating under Argentina's fragmented pre-1890 banking regime, before the Banca Nacional crisis and subsequent banking reforms swept most of them out of existence. A denomination of 4½ centavos fuertes is exceptionally unusual — fractional notes of this kind were typically emergency responses to acute small-coin shortages, and Entre Ríos province had chronic difficulties keeping low-denomination specie in circulation throughout the 1870s.
Printed locally in Paraná rather than sent abroad to a major security printer, which was itself a rarity for Argentine provincial issues of the period.
