Reverse description The reverse presents a large armillary sphere at centre, its horizontal bands and meridian rings rendered in fine detail, set against a plain field. Superimposed over the sphere is the cross of the Order of Christ, its arms extending to the periphery and dividing the field into quadrants. The circumferential Latin legend SUBQ. SIGN. NATA. STAB. runs along the dentilated border, proclaiming the motto 'Born under a steady sign.' The composition is characteristic of the Portuguese colonial coinage of the Bahia mint during the reign of Pedro II.
