The SNP's 320 Réis note commemorates the 1808 transfer of the Portuguese royal court to Rio de Janeiro — one of the more extraordinary logistical events in colonial history, when some ten to fifteen thousand courtiers, clergy, and administrators packed onto a fleet of ships and relocated the entire apparatus of European monarchy to South America to escape Napoleon's advance into Lisbon. The denomination is deliberate: 320 réis was the postage rate for a letter in early 19th-century Brazil, chosen here as a pointed historical reference rather than any circulating value.
