Additional information

Carlo V acquired Milan in 1535 following the death of the last Sforza duke, Francesco II, who died without an heir. Rather than grant the duchy to a new Italian lord, Carlo absorbed it directly into Habsburg administration — a decision that reshaped northern Italian politics for the next century and a half. The 32 soldi denomination itself was a Milanese accounting unit, and the coin's value was pegged to local commercial needs rather than any imperial standard.

Crippa's classification of this type as III#8 distinguishes it within a series of Carlos V Milanese issues that vary considerably by die workmanship and mint officina.
