The BEAC's "New York" issue belongs to a series of large-format silver pieces struck for the collector market — a revenue strategy increasingly common among Central African monetary authorities whose member states (Cameroon, CAR, Chad, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Congo) generate little return from standard circulation coinage. Rhodium plating on silver is technically demanding; the metal's extreme hardness and chemical inertness make adhesion finicky, and the red coloration here comes from a chromium oxide process applied over the rhodium layer rather than from the rhodium itself.
