Australia's platinum Koala program launched in 1987 as a direct response to the commercial success of the Isle of Man's platinum Noble and the Soviet Union's Palladium Ballerina, with Perth positioning itself aggressively in the investment-grade platinum bullion market. The 1000-gram piece sat at the apex of the denomination structure — an intentionally illiquid trophy coin produced in minuscule quantities, almost certainly fewer than ten examples struck in any given year of issue.
The third portrait of Elizabeth II, by Raphael Maklouf, was adopted by Australian coinage in 1985.
