| Additional information |
Cuba's state minting enterprise produced a series of large-format kilo silver pieces through the 1990s primarily for the international collector market, during a period when the island's hard currency earnings had collapsed following the Soviet withdrawal. The butterfly series drew on Cuba's genuinely exceptional lepidopteran diversity — the island hosts over 200 native species — making it one of the few thematic choices with direct scientific grounding rather than commercial opportunism.
Mintages on these kilo issues were kept extremely low, often under 500 pieces worldwide.
