Comments

Chinese prison scrip from the late 1950s occupies a genuinely obscure corner of notaphily. This note was issued by Shanxi Province First Prison — laogai facilities in the People's Republic routinely issued internal scrip during this period, allowing inmates to purchase approved goods within the facility while preventing any real currency from circulating inside. The system also served administrative purposes: tracking and controlling purchasing power at the individual level.

Surviving examples are rare simply because the scrip had no life outside the walls. Most was destroyed or confiscated at release.
