Additional information

This piece is one of the earliest entries in the Royal Canadian Mint's Wildlife Habitat Conservation series, a program launched in the late 1990s to position Canada as a serious player in the high-end platinum bullion and collector market. The Mint had only begun striking platinum coins in earnest in 1988 with its Maple Leaf program, and the shift toward large-format proof wildlife issues reflected a deliberate strategy to compete with prestige numismatic offerings from Perth and the British Royal Mint. Mintage on these $300 platinum proofs was tightly capped, typically under 500 pieces worldwide.
