Zamość was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1992, and this trial strike followed the following year as Poland's minting authority evaluated potential commemorative issues for the city. Trial pieces of this series were struck in nickel rather than the silver of the eventual circulation strikes, and very few were preserved outside official channels.
