Father Maksymilian Kolbe was executed at Auschwitz in August 1941 after volunteering to die in place of a stranger selected for starvation — a act that led to his canonization by John Paul II in 1982. This trial strike in nickel precedes the issued gold version, produced by the Mennica Polska as a die and planchet test piece rather than for circulation or general sale. Trial strikes of this type were rarely preserved outside mint and central bank archives, making survivors genuinely uncommon in the market.
