Obverse description Saint Mark, the patron saint of Venice, stands at left in episcopal vestments, presenting a staff surmounted by a cross to the kneeling Doge at right. The vertical inscription DVX appears between the two figures. The scene follows the long-established Venetian ducal iconographic tradition, rendered in bold relief. The legend naming the doge runs along the upper and outer field.

Additional information

Lodovico Manin, elected Doge in 1789, holds the distinction of being the last doge Venice would ever have. The 30 Zecchini was the heaviest gold multiple struck by the Venetian mint, produced in tiny quantities as a presentation or diplomatic piece rather than for any practical monetary purpose. Napoleon's ultimatum of May 1797 ended the Republic after over a millennium of continuous existence, and Manin reportedly wept and removed his ducal cap before the formal abdication vote — telling an attendant he would not be needing it again.
