Emmanuel de Rohan-Polduc, elected Grand Master in 1775, was among the last to govern Malta with genuine political autonomy before Napoleon's almost bloodless seizure of the island in 1798. His administration was remarkably reformist — he codified Maltese civil law, restructured the Order's finances, and maintained a functioning mint at Valletta even as the Knights' revenues from their European commanderies were being eroded by the early tremors of revolutionary France.
The 30 Tarì was the Order's principal large silver denomination, struck to a weight closely matching contemporary Spanish and Italian issues to facilitate Mediterranean trade. De Rohan's issues are more frequently encountered than those of several predecessors, reflecting a period of relative monetary stability before the collapse of 1798.
