Reverse description Central shield bearing the arms of Scotland — the lion rampant within a double tressure flory counter-flory — surmounted by an elaborate royal crown with cross and fleur-de-lis finials. The shield is flanked to the left by the initial mark 'I' (for Iacobus) and to the right by the mark of value, all set within a beaded inner circle. The date 1582 appears in the legend. The surrounding peripheral legend is separated from the inner circle by a beaded border, typical of hammered Scottish coinage of the period.
