Obverse description Bare-headed bust of Mary I, Queen of Scots, facing left, with elaborately dressed hair rendered in fine beaded detail, the neck and truncation draped in period costume visible at the lower field. The effigy is struck in high relief typical of mid-16th-century Scottish hammered gold coinage. The surrounding circular legend in Latin reads MARIA DEI G SCOTOR REGINA, separated by pellet stops, occupying the full periphery of the coin.
