Reverse description A finely rendered three-quarter figure of Fray Bartolomé de las Casas, the 16th-century Spanish Dominican friar and advocate for indigenous peoples, is depicted seated and leaning forward as he writes with a quill pen upon a manuscript, his right hand raised contemplatively near his face. He is shown in his Dominican habit with a cross suspended from a chain at his chest and the hood of his habit draped over his shoulders. The date 1992 with an engraver's mark appears to the left of the figure. The legend V CENTENARIO 1492 arcs along the upper rim between two five-pointed stars, with FRAY BARTOLOME DE LAS CASAS inscribed along the lower arc, all within the same rope and geometric decorative border as the obverse.
