The New Zealand Forces Club in Rome operated as a leave center for ANZAC troops following the Allied liberation of the city in June 1944. Club scrip of this type functioned as internal currency, restricting spending to authorized premises and preventing New Zealand military pay from bleeding into the devastated Italian civilian economy — a practical concern for Allied command throughout the Italian campaign.
The lire denomination is significant. Issuing scrip in local currency units rather than shillings or pence eased transactions for soldiers already carrying occupation lire, but kept the actual money supply internal to the club.
