Obverse description The winged Lion of St. Mark, the traditional heraldic symbol of Venice and the Ionian State, is depicted in left-facing passant stance occupying the central field, its nimbus rendered in relief above the mane. The lion's left forepaw rests upon a shield bearing a cross, with a sheaf of arrows or fasces visible behind. The Greek legend ΙΟΝΙΚΟΝ ΚΡΑΤΟΣ arcs along the upper periphery between a beaded inner border and the rim, with the date 1862 positioned in the lower field beneath the lion.
