Obverse description Four interlaced cursive royal monograms arranged in cruciform, each pair of opposed arms surmounted by a princely crown, with a larger central crown at the top and a decorative cartouche at the base. The four monograms, representing the cypher of Landgrave Ludwig VIII of Hesse-Darmstadt, are formed by paired capital letters disposed symmetrically around the central junction. The field is plain and the entire device is contained within a milled border of fine beads.

Reverse description Crowned arms of Hesse-Darmstadt displayed within an ornate baroque cartouche, with the denomination numeral and abbreviation flanking the shield. The mint official's initials appear at the sides of the cartouche, and the four-digit date is placed in the exergue below. The reverse legend and numerals are incuse within the field, framed by a continuous beaded border.
