Comments

Tafelberg is a small village in Lower Austria, and like hundreds of similar municipalities in the early 1920s, it issued its own Notgeld when the post-war coin shortage made everyday transactions nearly impossible. These local emergency notes were authorized under a framework that gave Austrian municipalities temporary latitude to print low-denomination scrip — the 30 Heller value sits squarely in the range intended to substitute for missing small change rather than to function as any kind of credit instrument.

Morawetz Johann's signature as the authorizing official is the primary accountability mechanism on the note. No central bank stood behind it.
