Comments

Bad Gastein's Heller notgeld was issued during the postwar Austrian currency chaos of 1920, when municipal and local authorities across the former Habsburg territories were forced to print their own emergency small-denomination scrip to cover the near-total disappearance of coins from circulation. Hoarding and metal shortages had gutted the small change supply, and communities like Bad Gastein — a resort spa town in the Salzburg Alps — had little choice but to fill the gap themselves.

The Jaksc catalog suffix "IIa" indicates a recognized variety within the series, likely distinguished by a printing or paper difference from the base type.
