Altenburg is a small municipality in the Krems region of Lower Austria — not Upper Austria, a cataloging error that turns up repeatedly in dealer listings. The 30 Heller Notgeld belongs to the wave of municipal emergency currency issued across Austria between roughly 1920 and 1922, when a chronic shortage of small-denomination coins forced hundreds of towns and villages to print their own fractional notes. Most Austrian Notgeld of this period was intentionally decorative, printed in limited quantities, and traded among collectors almost from the moment of issue — Altenburg's series was no exception.
