Hacklbrunn is a small village in Upper Austria, and its 1920 notgeld issue belongs to the vast wave of municipal emergency money printed across the former Habsburg territories after the collapse of the empire left Austria without a functional small-denomination currency supply. The Ortsgemeinde — literally the local community — had the legal standing to issue these notes under Austrian emergency provisions, but the quantities were typically tiny and distribution was purely local.
Franz Schaumberger's single signature suggests a one-man administrative operation. Notes from minor Ortsgemeinde issuers like this one were frequently redeemed and destroyed within months, which accounts for their scarcity today relative to larger town issues from the same period.
