Obverse description Central device depicts a stylized lion passant set against the silhouette of the Castle of Fuensaldaña, rendered in low relief against a plain field. The regional heraldic symbolism of Castilla y León is thus combined in a single emblematic composition. The legend 'CASTILLA y LEÓN' appears along the upper portion of the field, with the date '1997' below. The design is contained within a beaded border.

Additional information

The Junta de Castilla y León issued this piece under the regional commemorative authority granted to Spanish autonomous communities in the 1990s — a period when several regions exercised that privilege to produce legal-tender silver issues aimed squarely at the collector market rather than circulation. Castilla y León, the largest autonomous community in the European Union by area, had particular motivation to assert a distinct regional identity through such issues ahead of the peseta's absorption into the euro.
